The massive debate of AI VS GTA reached a boiling point today. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick officially slammed the idea that generative AI tools like Google’s Project Genie can replicate the success of a handcrafted masterpiece. While many believe in an automated future, Zelnick insists that the AI VS GTA comparison remains a ‘ridiculous’ notion for the entertainment industry.
AI VS GTA & CEO RESPONS
A short time ago Google began to launch Project Genie, an AI tool that lets users make playable “worlds” with prompt commands. Now, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says the AI tools in their entirety may contribute to the industry but won’t be able to develop games like Grand Theft Auto. Zelnick, for his part, said there is no way for any tool such as Project Genie to rival Take-Two as they just can’t make games and worlds like Grand Theft Auto. He called such an idea “out of touch with reality.”
Key Points from Zelnick’s Words:
Technology vs Success
There is technology and lots of game-making tools already available to people. Thousands of titles are produced each year in due course. But the number of hits is almost entirely concentrated in just a few major entertainment corporations, with the occasional indie hit appearing–frequently the big one. It is usually one that is well-financed and powerful itself.
The “Push-Button” Myth
The notion that new equipment will let one person simply press a button, create a hit and deliver it to millions of people worldwide is simply crazy. By no means has this been the case in entertainment.
The Music Analogy
There are currently music programs that offer you the chance to write a “professional” song through a prompt. It sounds like a song, or so Zelnick asked: “I dare you to listen to it more than once.” It’s all right for a partner’s birthday, but that’s enough.
The Role of AI
Zelnick agreed that those tools are helpful for the industry because they help creators create assets, but that is as far as it goes. They can’t create hits by themselves.
